After a dental extraction, follow these instructions to ensure proper healing:
1. Bite on Gauze: Maintain gentle pressure on the gauze pad placed over the extraction site for 30-60 minutes to control bleeding. Replace it if it becomes soaked.
2. Avoid Sucking and Spitting: Do not suck through straws, spit vigorously, or rinse your mouth forcefully for the first 24 hours to prevent dislodging the blood clot that forms in the socket.
3. Rest and Elevate: Rest with your head elevated to minimize swelling and bleeding. Avoid strenuous activities for a couple of days.
4. Ice Packs: Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face near the extraction site for 15-20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.
5. Pain Management: Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed by your dentist or oral surgeon. Follow the dosage instructions carefully.
6. Diet: Stick to soft foods and avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods. Gradually reintroduce regular foods as you feel comfortable.
7. Oral Hygiene: Keep your mouth clean but avoid brushing the extraction site directly for the first 24 hours. After that, gently brush your teeth and rinse with a mild, non-alcoholic mouthwash or a saltwater solution.
8. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol, as these can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.
9. Follow-Up: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns.
If you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection (such as fever, swelling, or pus), contact your dentist or oral surgeon promptly.
