Flossing is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Here’s how to do it effectively:
1. Choose the Right Floss: Select a type of dental floss that suits your needs—waxed, unwaxed, flavored, or tape floss, depending on your preference.
2. Cut the Floss: Break off about 18 inches (45 cm) of floss. Wind most of it around one of your middle fingers. Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand. This finger will take up the used floss as you go.
3. Hold the Floss Properly: Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers, leaving about 1-2 inches (3-5 cm) of floss between them.
4. Insert the Floss Between Teeth: Gently guide the floss between your teeth using a rubbing motion. Be careful not to snap the floss into your gums, which can cause injury.
5. Curve the Floss Around Each Tooth: Once the floss reaches the gumline, curve it into a C-shape against one tooth. Slide it gently into the space between the gum and the tooth.
6. Move the Floss Up and Down: While keeping the floss curved around the tooth, move it up and down, cleaning the side of the tooth. Repeat this motion 2-3 times.
7. Repeat on All Teeth: Move to the next tooth using a clean section of floss for each one. Repeat the process until you've flossed all your teeth, including the back molars.
8. Rinse Your Mouth: After flossing, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash to remove any dislodged particles.
9. Floss Daily: For optimal oral health, floss at least once a day, preferably before bedtime.
